Criminal Court Cases in Routt County
Routt Combined Court keeps the county's District and County Court files. District Court is the felony trial court and hears other matters within its higher jurisdiction. County Court handles misdemeanors, traffic matters, and early felony proceedings when assigned. The record may include the complaint or information, register of actions, hearing entries, motions, pleas, rulings, judgment, sentence, and public financial orders.
A court record answers what prosecutors filed and what the judge did. It does not include every police contact. An incident can produce an agency report without a criminal filing, while a filed case can end in dismissal or acquittal. Use the CoCourts search to identify participating Colorado trial-court matters, then request the controlling document from the clerk when the outcome must be proved.
Routt Court's Unit 200 Counter
The local clerk counter is at Routt County Justice Center, 1955 Shield Drive, Suite 200, Steamboat Springs, Colorado 80487. Call 970-879-5020 ext. 7 or email routtclerk@judicial.state.co.us. Counter hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. Those counter hours are narrower than general building hours.
Clerks can locate and copy public records but cannot give legal advice. Older material, protected documents, and records held off site may take more time. Email transmission is not filing until the clerk accepts and uploads it.
Routt County Case Record Searches
Several official channels serve different needs. CoCourts is a paid, registration-based statewide index. Colorado Judicial's free Docket Search is a court calendar, not a full case packet. The clerk accepts phone, email, in-person, and written document requests. Use this sequence to avoid paying for the wrong product:
- Search by exact case number when one is known. It is stronger than a name alone.
- For a name search, add Routt County, case type, date range, and date of birth where the system permits it.
- Check the Judicial Docket Search for a scheduled hearing, selecting the 14th Judicial District, Routt County, and Routt County Combined Court.
- Ask the clerk for the ROA and the specific complaint, disposition, sentence, or protection order needed.
- Request a certified or exemplified copy if a receiving office requires formal proof.
A blank calendar result does not establish that no case exists. The event might fall outside the date filter, have no current hearing, be restricted, or be filed in a municipal or federal court.
Three Routt Court Systems
Jurisdiction determines where a record lives. Steamboat Springs, Hayden, and Oak Creek municipal courts handle ordinance violations and authorized municipal matters. A city citation or municipal bench warrant may never appear as a Routt District or County Court case. The following split helps direct a search.
| Court | Typical matter | Best record source |
|---|---|---|
| District Court | Felonies and higher-jurisdiction cases | Routt Combined Court and CoCourts |
| County Court | Misdemeanors, traffic, early felony stages | Routt Combined Court and CoCourts |
| Municipal Court | City-code and municipal matters | The relevant city court |
If a location within city limits produced the citation, check that city's court before concluding the record is missing. The city pages for Steamboat Springs, Hayden, and Oak Creek explain those local routes.
What a Criminal Case File Contains
A public entry can identify the court, filing, parties, counts, and current status. Details vary with the case and public-access rules. A result page is an index; the filed order remains the safer source for the exact outcome.
| Case Number | Unique District, County, or municipal court identifier. |
|---|---|
| Charges | Count, offense text, Colorado statute, class, and amended or dismissed status. |
| Parties | People of Colorado, defendant, and counsel; protected victim data may be suppressed. |
| Hearing Dates | Event type, date, time, courtroom or division, and judicial officer. |
| Disposition & Judgment | Result by count, such as guilty, dismissed, acquitted, or deferred judgment, with date. |
| Sentence & Conditions | Public incarceration, probation, fine, cost, restitution, and balance entries. |
Protected affidavits, medical or evaluation material, victim information, juvenile records, and sealed filings are not ordinary public downloads. A redacted online view may contain less than the clerk's public paper file.
Request the Routt Court Outcome
Colorado Judicial's Record/Document Request Form asks for requester contact details and a usable case description. Its case fields include number, type, filing year, county or location, date of birth, party names, and other identifying facts. Criminal-document choices include Complaint or Information, Disposition or Sentence Order, Protection Order, Ticket, and Register of Action. Certification and exemplification can also be selected.
Someone reconciling a CBI arrest cycle should compare name, birth date, arrest date, arresting agency, case number, count, and disposition date. If CBI lacks the result, obtain a certified court copy and follow the Colorado Bureau of Investigation challenge instructions. The court supplies its judgment; CBI maintains repository data.
Criminal Case Stages in Routt County
Case paths vary, but the record usually moves from an alleged event through filing and resolution. A felony complaint may begin with an early County Court proceeding before the District Court phase. Charges received at booking can be amended, reduced, replaced, or never filed.
Case flow: Arrest › Booking › Filing › Advisement › Motions or plea › Trial or disposition › Sentencing
Each point creates a different date. Arrest time is not booking time. Booking is not filing. A plea date is not always the sentence date. Searchers should compare the charge status by count instead of treating the first allegation as the final conviction.
Routt Court Copy Costs
Official judicial access material lists the following charges. Ask the clerk for a current estimate before ordering a long file, off-site material, or records requiring redaction.
| Service | Published charge | Limit or note |
|---|---|---|
| Copies | $0.25 per page | Party or attorney maximum $15; no such maximum for nonparties |
| Name search | $5 | Use a case number when possible |
| Certified or exemplified copy | $20 per document | Separate from page-copy charges |
| Transcript of Judgment | $25 | Specific court product |
| Research or redaction | $30 per hour | 15-minute units after the first hour |
| Off-site retrieval | Actual cost | May affect timing |
CJD 06-01 and C.R.S. §13-32-104 govern relevant charges and waivers. Cost alone does not turn a vendor index into a certified record. Certification comes through the clerk.
Federal Cases Leave Routt County
Federal criminal matters arising in Routt County are filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado. They do not belong to Routt Combined Court. PACER's official case-search entry point shows how federal party and case-number research begins.

The separate federal index is why a complete search may require both state and federal channels. PACER charges $0.10 per page, generally capped at $3 per document, with quarterly charges waived when the total is $30 or less under the current schedule. Sealed filings and grand-jury material remain unavailable.
Access Rules for Case Records
Colorado recognizes court-record inspection while protecting restricted material. CORA governs general public records, and the Colorado Criminal Justice Records Act governs records kept by criminal-justice agencies. Court rules and C.R.S. §13-1-119 also shape clerk access. Open access does not mean every filing is unredacted or online.
The statewide court search interface illustrates available search fields and county filters.

Juvenile files, sealed cases, protected victim identities, medical information, and some affidavits may be hidden or withheld. If a known Routt County case does not appear, give the clerk enough facts to search older or unavailable electronic material. Ask for the legal basis when access is denied. Never treat an absent public result as proof that an event did not occur.
